Encourage users to activate the physical web feature in compatible web browsers

Is it possible to use JavaScript to encourage users to activate the physical web (and thus BlueTooth), similar to how APIs like "getUserMedia()" prompt users?

UPDATE: Given that this technology is still in its early stages and not extensively supported, the most efficient solution may be to guide users in enabling this feature under Settings > Privacy > Physical Web=on.

Answer №1

JavaScript has the capability to generate push notifications, but it's important to note that these notifications may not align with the desired prompt from the original poster. One potential workaround could involve:

  1. Navigating to a web page
  2. Utilizing JavaScript to search for beacons
  3. If a beacon is detected, encouraging the user to enable Physical Web for easier beacon discovery in the future

It's worth mentioning that WebBluetooth V1 only supports connections to a single device. Version 2 has a proposal in progress (though not finalized) that would allow scanning. While these developments are still in the early stages, they are part of upcoming plans, indicating progress in this area.

Answer №2

Unfortunately, there is no way to prompt any device on your machine using JavaScript. It can only access LocalStorage on your disk.
