Can the V8 JavaScript engine made by Google be used on iOS devices?

Is V8 compatible with iOS? If not, what embeddable JavaScript engine would you suggest?

UPDATE:

We will only be using it for internal scripting purposes, rather than in combination with HTML rendering.

Answer №1

Apple has strict guidelines when it comes to rendering web content in an app, requiring the use of WebKit. Deviating from this requirement may result in your app being rejected by Apple.

However, there are instances where you might need JavaScript for purposes other than webpage rendering. In such cases, you should be able to use any JavaScript engine of your choice. The V8 source code is available in C++, allowing you to potentially compile it into an iOS project. To do this, you will need to rename files with V8 functionality from .m to .mm, signaling XCode to compile them as Objective-C++. This process may be a bit tricky, but theoretically feasible.
