Can a Bluetooth speaker in a car be utilized for noise cancellation?

While using my ANC earphones one day, I had a thought.

The earphones were nearly able to drown out the noise of the car.

This got me thinking: could ANC technology be used with car speakers and mobile phone apps?

Although it might be challenging to respond quickly to sound changes, I believed continuous noise reduction could be achieved.

The idea is to analyze incoming sounds through the microphone, identify Bluetooth latency, pinpoint the frequency for noise reduction, and then reduce the noise accordingly.

I scoured GitHub for existing projects but came up empty-handed. My mission now is to either find such projects or start one myself.

Questions:

  1. If this concept is impossible, why?
  2. If it's feasible, are there any existing projects like this?
  3. What techniques would be needed to bring this idea to life?

If nothing turns up, I'll take on the challenge of creating an Android or web app project myself :)

Answer №1

It seems highly unlikely that this can be achieved.

In order to attempt something like this, a calibration phase would need to be implemented. The speakers would need to transmit calibration audio for the wavelengths to reach your ear accurately. Furthermore, most cars do not come equipped with built-in multi-surround audio via Bluetooth, limiting you to stereo sound in your car and adding another layer of complexity.

After initiating calibration and signal measurement, a continuous loop of data collection would be required to generate a noiseprint. This process would necessitate having microphones positioned as close to your ears as possible to capture the exact sound you are experiencing. Additionally, high-quality microphones would be essential for accurate recording.

Taking all these factors into consideration, it becomes clear that achieving this goal is indeed quite challenging, if not nearly impossible.
