Are there any publicly accessible Content Delivery Networks that offer hosting for JSON2?

Everyone knows that popular tech giants like Google and Microsoft provide hosting for various javascript libraries on their CDNs (content distribution networks). However, one library missing from their collection is JSON2.js.

Although I could upload JSON2.js to my own server and serve it from there, I prefer utilizing the benefits offered by CDNs.

So, my question is: are there any public CDNs that offer hosting for JSON2? If not, what could be the reason behind this absence? Is there a copyright concern or some other issue?

Answer №1

For more resources, you can visit cdnjs.com

json2.js is available on Yandex CDN servers, accessible at this link.

To download the full version, visit this URL.

If you prefer a minified version, it can be found at this location.

Don't forget that HTTPS is also supported for secure connections.

It may be premature to anticipate major CDNs adopting this approach. Once a library is widely adopted by numerous sites, the advantages become apparent: improved availability, increased usage, reduced client requests, and enhanced performance for the end user. If only a small number of sites utilize the library, there is a low likelihood that clients will already have it cached, leading to missed performance enhancements. Therefore, the key is to encourage more developers to integrate the library into their projects.

In addition, the library is quite compact. Even with conservative minification, the code remains at only 3.5KB. For perspective, jQuery is 24KB and ext-core is 29KB. It may be advisable to integrate the library into your website's base JS to optimize performance until it gains wider acceptance.

Interestingly, I would have expected the JSON library to be hosted on Yahoo as well, considering Crockford's association. However, it appears to be unavailable on their platform.

Here are two reasons why there is no minified version of the script, according to Thomas from cdnjs.com:

1) The chosen method of minification may cause the script to not function as intended by the author. 2) To ensure security, all files hosted on the site must match the original authors' checksums, preventing any potentially malicious code in community-submitted updates.

For now, the un-minified version of the script can be found hosted by Crockfords: https://github.com/douglascrockford/JSON-js/raw/master/json2.js

New development alert!

A new update from Douglas Crockford has just been released on github, find the latest version here.

Note: It is advised not to utilize this technique, check out my clarification in the comment section.
