Aptana - Expose the Declaration

After hearing rave reviews about Aptana being the best IDE for JavaScript, I decided to download it. I grabbed a project from GitHub, found a method call in the code, right clicked on it, and saw 'open declaration - F3'. However, when I tried both options, Aptana did not respond at all. Disappointed, I uninstalled Aptana.

I'm curious if there is any way in Aptana to easily navigate from a method call or variable to its declaration. If a feature as basic as that is missing in version 3, it makes me question all the hype surrounding Aptana.

Answer №1

After a disappointing experience with v2, I decided to give version 3 a try.

I have found that while open declaration works within the same file, it fails to work across multiple files in the same project.

That's the answer portion covered, now onto my frustrated rant:

What aggravates me even more is that when I hover over a function call, it shows me the exact location of the function - directory and file name. Yet, when I try to use F3 or open declaration, nothing happens as mentioned by the original poster.

This indicates that there should be a way to search for functions across other files in the same project.

How can Aptana know the exact location of a function but not be able to open it within the same project?

Where are the APTANA developers when you need them?

Answer №2

It is indeed possible to achieve this, although it may not be flawless. When you notice that it is locating a pathway to the function, hold down the ctrl key and hover over the function. This action should display a dropdown list of paths leading to the locations where the function was originally defined within your workspace. Simply click on one of the options and it will promptly transport you to that particular declaration.
